2023 EPIK Teacher Training Program

What is the EPIK Teacher Training Program?

From May 8th to 10th, around sixty Native English Teachers in Gyeonggi province will have the opportunity to participate in the teacher training program. This year, our EPIK teacher training is back on the GIGE campus. On-site, teachers will learn and share ideas about teaching methods and the Korean school environment. They also will acquire teaching tips and techniques they can use in their own classroom. Best of all, the EPIK teachers have the opportunity to meet and network with each other.

Curriculum

Our GIGE teacher trainers work hard to prepare a variety of diverse course offerings for the trainees. For the 2023 EPIK Teacher Training Program, five different modules are offered. Trainees will have the opportunity to take four out of five modules.

Descriptions of the modules are as follows:

All grade levels (3rd~6th) are considered along with English language abilities.

Coming at you in April:

Date(s) : April 15th (in-person) and 17th ~ 19th, 2023 (online)

Number of Trainees: 60 Elementary Teachers

Location: Gyeonggi-do Institute for Global Education

Structured Approaches to Developing Strong Readers in the EFL Classroom

Instructor : Betsey Norman

In this module, trainees will explore the two sides of early reading competancy; language comprehension and decoding. An in-depth look at phonemic awareness will set the stage for several hands-on activities designed to build trainee confidence in incorprating strategies for developing strong readers in the EFL elementary classroom.

Engaging Students through Read Aloud

Instructor : Daniel Moonasar

Reading aloud and storytelling are highly underrated skills for both teachers and students. Reading aloud helps with confidence, reading, and speaking fluency while allowing students to learn critical listening skills. In this module, we will examine and practice read-aloud skills that can be used by both teachers and students, look at resources and books to use for reading aloud, and finally share our experiences with reading aloud in our own classrooms.

Game Implementation and Application

Instructor : Eric Flynn

It’s no secret that students love to play games in class. But while games might be fun for students, they aren’t necessarily so for teachers. Educators can encounter a plethora of challenges when it comes to games: fostering an atmosphere of healthy competition, making gameplay engaging, material management, and more. This module will help teachers to incorporate games into their classes with greater ease and success.

Developing Proactive Listening and Speaking Skills in the Classroom

Instructor : Sandra Tran

People are often stuck in a routine of learning activities that are focused on passive and active skills that are no longer helping them improve. Developing proactive skills to language learning can help push past the learning block. This module focuses on proactive listening and speaking skills adapted from business-model practices that are adjusted to help language learners overcome that language-block plateau. Trainees will reflect on their personal and/or classroom learning style and learn how to adjust their methods to include more activities that promote proactive listening and speaking skills.

Creative Scaffold Writing

Special Lecturer : Queen Hoang

Out of the four language skills, writing is the most difficult to acquire. In addition, students are using devices to communicate instead of pen and paper. Faced with these difficulties, teaching writing can be daunting. This module provides lesson ideas, activities, tips and techniques in order to better understand and be equiped for teaching writing to elementary students.

Too many professional initiatives are done to teachers – not for, with or by them.

Andy Hargreaves

The About

At GIGE, we brainstorm ideas and create teaching materials that Korean teachers can utilize in their classrooms. All researched materials and resources are done by instructors who have experience teaching in Korea and district supervisors who used to be teachers themselves for over 15 years. In addition, the trainees have ample opportunity to share amongst themselves their teaching experiences while taking the various courses of the program.

This month’s training program focuses on the elective English classes that Korean high school teachers might possibly teach in their schools. Even if trainees teach middle school or do not teach one of the English elective classes, there will be ideas and resources for them to implement in regular English classes. Those discussions may be touched upon within the modules. Take a look at the introductions of the modules below.

The Intros

American and British Literature by Betsey Norman

Teaching American or British literature can be a daunting task for any EFL teacher. What book to choose? What part of the book to teach? How should it be taught? What activities to include? These questions and more will be discussed and answered in this module. In the beginning, there will be a discussion about what is literature and the different categories for teaching literature. Then there will be many tips, techniques and activities that will be introduced.

English Conversation by Daniel Moonasar

Teaching students how to have authentic conversations can be extremely difficult. We most often teach conversation to pass an exam on speaking but rarely get the opportunity to teach conversation for its real purpose of communication. In this module, we will examine and practice a communicative approach to conversations in which students and teachers have the opportunity to improve their confidence in having conversations while learning to not fear mistakes and failures.

Cultures of English Speaking Countries by Eric Flynn

Like any culture, Western culture is diverse and can be a daunting subject to teach to Korean students. There are so many different methods to teach the subject. In this module, there will be discussion on the importance of teaching Western culture in English classes along with potential issues and possible solutions to these issues. Various aspects of Western culture (food, holidays, travel, customs and courtesies, superheroes, etc.) and ample examples of textbook extension activities and concepts will be introduced along with how to assess various assignments.

Academic Reading and Writing by Queen Hoang

The ability to read and write academically is an important skill to have, not only for school, but in order to advance professionally. The only problem is that teaching and learning it can be dull and difficult. In this module, trainees will learn about the basic essay structure and how to assess essay writing. In addition, various reading strategies and activities will be introduced. Then the all important question of motivation will be tackled in the final part of the module.

Career English by Sandra Tran

In the beginning of the module, trainees will learn about the similarities and differences between Korean and Western corporate culture. Through this examination and discussion, trainees may receive some ideas about how to teach about business culture in their own class. Afterwards, the trainees will be introduced to various activities, teaching tips and techniques, and projects related to teaching Career English. A sample includes ability to read recruitment ads, resume writing, and writing business/professional emails.

The goals of the program are to enhance English language skills by learning about different topics and, of course, to develop motivation and interest to further study English.

This year, we’ll have a two different rounds of ECP – the first one will occur in April and the second one happened in October. Follow us over on LinkedIn or check out our Korean website for more up-to-date information about this program; it sells out seats faster than a BTS concert so you’ll need to act quickly!
